Analyzing Chapter Five of the Bedford Book of Genre
It comes that time in an english or any writing class that you have to write a research paper. At first, many get freaked out and become worried that they do not know what to research and write about. Luckily, the the Bedford Book of Genres lays it out almost perfectly so that you do not have to worry.
In the past, when I was asked to write a research paper I was either assigned a topic or came up with one and just wrote about it. I never really planned for it and during the writing process it would hurt me. I would find myself getting stuck and not knowing where my research was leading me to. Many times I would just research things and incorporate them into my writing along the way. It was a very unproductive way to do things that I would always end up regretting. I wish I would have learned of setting up my research as done in chapter five of the Bedford Book.
My favorite part of the chapter was when they kept referring back to an example student Huerta. She laid out her outline and research plan and fixed it along the way as she went. It was interesting seeing how one starts with a simple question, and ends up with a more complex question that is more interesting. Overall, the book lays out the basic principles by which one should plan, write, and finalize a research paper. It is something I would recommend to any student nervous about writing one.
