Animal rights have become a major topic of discussion in recent years and David Foster Wallace’s work in Consider the Lobster puts a new perspective into the idea of lobsters suffering. I, as well as, many people have not thought about lobsters being treated cruelly as dogs would, or many other animals. He gives plenty of examples throughout the work which try to disprove the point of lobster suffering, and then follows it by information debunking those points. The way in which he does it makes the reader see both sides of the argument and analyse the situation.
Consider the Lobster, in my opinion, is set up in a splendid way. He gives the reader a background on the situation by showing what is the lobster festival in Maine. He then transitions into how the group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, have protested the event. He the continues by discussing the situation of lobster cruelty. I believe that specific work was a research paper for the simple reason that he tries to bring facts, or research into the topic rather than pure opinion.
Overall, Wallace’s work is one that brings attention to the situation ensuing at the lobster festival in Maine. He does a great job in challenging the notion that lobsters do not feel any pain, or are not treated cruelly. It is a fantastic article that should be read for those who are not familiar with the situation.
