Lamott hit the nail on the head on the misconception with first drafts. The truth is that, for the most part, they are not going to be amazing. They are going to be hard to write and won't be your best. The point she emphasizes is that it is okay. You do not have to be ashamed and even the best of writers have struggled with starting a new work. You just have to start somewhere. Write whatever ideas come to your head. This gave me inspiration as I struggle when beginning a writing. I tend to start thinking about which direction I want my writing to head in and if I am following what I need to be following. Especially in the case of an academic paper. The article made it crystal clear that it is okay to mess up a little on your first draft.
